5,5-Dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide (DMPO) is commonly used as a cell-permeable, hydrophilic spin trap agent for studies of superoxide, S-, O-, C- and N- centered free radicals in electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). This agent is water-soluble and able to penetrate lipid bilayers.
It has demonstrated neuroprotective properties. The presence of DMPO while incubation of lymphocytes decreases DNA damage by NiCl. It is reported that the recovery of heart function is improved in DMPO-treated hearts in a rat model.
Applications:
• Study of free radicals
• Detection of superoxide
